BMW X6 scooped

Going through the paces at the Nurburgring's NordSchleife. The heavy disguise keeps the details secret but from the proportions and the heavy roof camouflage, expect a sloping roofline and a more sporty stance. The wheelarches look like they are quite heavily flared under the body capping.
The lack of rear headroom is conclusive proof of the sloping roofline, this may prove to be a major stumbling block in the showroom, after all this is still a luxury vehicle.
Dash is covered in fake moulding but the vent design, radio location and centre screen from the on board computer indicates that the current look prevails

Renault Logan in Brazil and Argentina

Renault has launched it low-cost Logan in two important South American markets, Argentina and Brazil. This expansion is in line with the company's plan for growth and the low-cost entry point will certainly help increase their market share and train buyers into the Renault habit.
Assembled at the Curitiba plant (picture above), the X90-platform will help take up some of the slack in production demand there. The Malaysian importer for Renautl, TC Euro Cars have long insisted that the Logan may not be suitable for the more sophisticated Malaysian market. Given that teh Saga is Proton's saviour, maybe TCEC's take on the market is a bit skewed. Eitehr that or they mean to say that they cannot bring the car in at the right price. Below RM70K is a good starting point - if the rumours of a sub RM70k Toyota Vios is anything to go by.
By the way, UMW has refused to confirm any price speculation and insists that it would be wrong to compare Thai prices because our specs would be different.
Teh Logan was devised as an entry-level car for developing markets, with the initial target being Eastern Europe . Renault figured that the basic spec would be a welcome change for a population who grew up on Lada and Skoda (pre-VW) junk. It was engineered with a EURO5K price tag. Showroom prices are slightly higher than that.

It shows that even European manufacturers can build really cheap cars. Some years ago former Proton CEO was asked if they could build really cheap cars for the people he said it was impossible to sell a car at RM25k for a profit.TCEC is still insisting the Logan would not come but they may change their mind given time. After all they only have the Kangoo keeping them above water and a well-priced Logan would certainly help their market visibility and profitability.

This is the Type R by Mugen - Which one do you like?
Wild spoilers but quite subtle elsewhere, this is a magnificent loong family saloon.

The red velour insert may be too much for some tastes but this is a Type R and not your aunt Lydia's.

VW slap for Pak Lah?

Doesn't anyone find it embarrassing that Vokswagen has not turned up for their meeting with Pak Lah?
Here is our Prime Minister opening his doors to the company and they do not seem the least interested.
While it may be true that Khazanah made a pig's breakfast of the negotiations by insisting on too many conditions, surely Proton is still desirable to a company that can get its act together and sell cars that people want.
Heck I would have thought that with VW's experience and economies of scale they could probably produce Proton-badged cars at a much lower price and be back to controlling 60 per cent of the market, like the good old days - except this time the cars work and people may actually want them.
The someone pointed out that half of all cars sold in this country is a Toyota product in one form or another. No thanks to Perodua's domination and UMW Toyota's iron grip on the non-national segment.
Perhaps we could just adopt Toyota as a national brand and sell Proton to them. After all they already control the market, why not just give them the whole pie.
Stranger things have happened in Malaysia.....

Volvo Child safety seat - 1967

Small children should ride facing the rear in cars, according to Volvo Cars safety experts and independent traffic-safety researchers alike. This has been a key factori in the Volvo Cars child safety development work since the mid-1960s.
The new child seat was a clever design that was based on the car’s passenger seat. By unscrewing the seat and turning it around, the basis for the child seat was created and this was then supplemented with a specially padded backrest panel with attached securing straps and a safety harness for the child.

Lamborghini coffee maker

For all you high test caffeine lovers out there Lamborghini offers us the Torino coffee machine. The hand built machine goes for about $1750 USD (1.350 EUR or 895 BP) and only about 1,000 are available. Moreover, as in all Lamborghini fashion, there is exquisite attention to detail with the iconic bull logo on the stainless steel front panel and a stick shift lever so you can muck around until the coffee’s ready.... Of course, no Lamborghini coffee machine would be complete without its own coffee beans and ceramic espresso cups which go for about 62 Euros for a set of four. If the Espada Espressos don’t wake you up in the morning, the reminder of what you paid for this legal addictive stimulant maker will!

Refreshed S40 and V50

* Increased differentiation between the S40 and V50
* New S40 front with lower, broader stance
* Sportier new grille creates a tougher V50 look
* Slimmer tail lamps and new rear bumper
* Larger and more practical storage space
* New real wood inlay - Nordic Light Oak
* Fresh new Spring Green upholstery

Sportier V50 grille

The new black egg-crate grille with its larger Volvo iron mark emphasises a sporty language. The new headlamps and the three sculpted lower air intakes are other details that give the new colour-coordinated soft-nose V50 front an increased impression of solidity.

"Here, we've created visual vertical elements in order to further emphasise the new grille," says Steve Harper.

Slimmer tail lamps

The lower part of the tail lamp panel on both the S40 and V50 is 30 millimetres higher than before and the lamps themselves have an entirely new graphic layout. The brake lights are now of LED type and the position marker lamps emphasise the car's shoulders.

The new bumper features integrated reflectors in the lower corners and the lower, broader design language is supplemented with the more horizontal lines of the exhaust tailpipe.

"The improved shape and position of the exhaust tailpipes is a good example of how a little extra visual touch can create a highly potent impression," says Steve Harper.

Freeing up storage space

When refining the interior, the design team transformed itself into something of a liberation movement for storage space.

"The criticism of the current models' limited storage space served as high-octane fuel when the time came to sketch the new interior of the S40 and V50. We weren't entirely satisfied until we felt we had exploited every single available cubic centimetre in an efficient way," relates Steve Harper.

The team concentrated its efforts on two areas: the door sides and the centre stack.

The entire lower part of the front door inside panels was redesigned. The audio system loudspeakers were reshaped to free up space for a new, larger storage compartment with space for an A4 format book, an upright soft drinks can or a water bottle lying down.

As an added bonus, space was also freed up for an extra Dynaudio loudspeaker (only for Premium Sound), which adds even more spice to the audio experience.

Larger and more intelligent centre console

The already iconic super-slim centre console is available in additional decor versions such as the Nordic Light Oak real wood inlay, and the theme now flows smoothly with similar elegant soft curvature surfaces all the way to the rear seat.

The storage space between the seats has also been refined with the help of Scandinavian design tradition's most renowned hallmark - smart functionality.

The handbrake has a more compact design, which in turn has freed space for more generous storage capacity.

Sliding cover and flexible armrest

The sliding cover over the larger storage compartments, in which there are also two holders that provide secure support for large and small cups, is complemented by an improved flexible armrest for the driver. This also has a built-in feature that the design team playfully call the "hamburger table".

"We've even utilised the small spaces that are usually simply covered over when they're not housing controls for options or accessories. Now instead, the space has been converted into a handy compartment, for instance for a mobile phone. After all, the phone is not something we should be using while driving, anyway," explains Steve Harper, and adds:

"And on the back of the console there is another little jewel: a flip-up holder for a 1.5-litre bottle within easy reach of passengers in the rear-seat."

New upholstery and green highlight colour

New design details in the instrument panel and air vents also contribute to the interior refinement in the new S40 and V50.

The upholstery range has been expanded both at base level and for the more exclusive options, for instance with a new, finer grained leather. At base level there is a green ‘accent' colour fabric with the poetic name of Spring Green.

"The green upholstery is entirely in line with the increasing demand for personalised choices by our customers. We started with blue and red upholstery in the new Volvo C30, and now we are introducing green in the new S40 and V50. I'm sure it's going to be very popular," says Steve Harper.

Proton Update

First there was talk that WV bosses may come meet Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi but that lead seem to have gone lukewarm. Then there was word that DRB was offering Khazanah RM8.50 per Proton share and that sounded like a good deal when compared to alleged RM6.50 offered by VW. Meanwhile Naza's Nasimuddin Amin told the Media that he would take whatever the government offered him, whether its a little bit or the whole lot although he has not mad any mention of price. Sure the highest bid makes good financial sense in the short term but we have to look at Proton's predicament with a longer term goal in sight. Which has the better chance of sustaining Proton and turning it into a regional and maybe even global brand? I do not want to sound like I am pitching for any company but that is what we should be looking at. Some observers are giving Proton one more year of breathing space before they may start defaulting, if the market situation and Proton's own sales performance does not improve. According to an insider Proton has shifted most of their old metal (i.e 2005-2006 model year cars) thanks to a little bit of help from AmFinance's sub-prime financing scheme and that is a spot of good news. But that still leaves them with slow moving Gen.2 and Savvy holding back lukewarm sales chat topper, the Waja. bviously the Wira and Saga continues to fly out of showrooms but these are old horses about to be retired this year and would not be of much help to Proton anymore. If the Saga and Wira replacement models are not well received by the market then Proton's health is only going to get worse. Toyota's new Vios is coming in at under RM70,000, Perodua is cornering the market segments under that price. It seems that Proton's main rival now is Toyota and Proton's new partner had better have a plan to match them model by model at every price point or we might as well sell the company to Toyota.

Nice car, if the under RM70K price tag is true, woo hoo, Proton is going to be in deep trouble

The video that apparently made Perodua angry

I don't know what teh fuss is all about, the show was aired some time ago and everyone knows that Jezza is a good entertainer, thats it.

BTW I don't remember Perodua MD Syed Hafiz being someone who gets angry too quickly, so my take is that some reporters may have asked him to comment on the review and he said it was not carried out according to accepted standards.....

enjoy

It runs on water

This very intriguing video was captured off Fox News. How true is it? I don't know but it makes for good viewing
